Hüsker Dü’s Zen Arcade

Here’s a new entry in my ongoing series of photos showcasing my record collection. This entry features my new vinyl purchase from the Princeton Record Exchange yesterday: Hüsker Dü’s Zen Arcade.

While I’m not as much of a Hüsker Dü fan as I am a Replacements fan (those two are in a constant battle for the title of greatest Minnesota punk band), I can’t deny how much this record influenced punk and alternative rock, and I do like it on its own merits, at least enough for me to consider buying it.

How did I manage to get it? Well, after graduation yesterday, my family and I went to lunch at The Alchemist & Barrister in Princeton and near the end of the meal, my dad told my mom, sister, and grandmom that there’s a Kate Spade right around the corner from the restaurant, so while they decided to stop in and see what they could buy, my dad and I took a trip up to the Record Exchange, for which my grandmom GENEROUSLY gave me money to spend. I didn’t have anything specific in mind, I just wanted to see what deals I could take advantage of. I actually passed on this record at first because of the high price tag ($40, which is justifiable seeing as how it’s a double album AND it’s an original copy of the record), and because I wanted to see what else I could find, and I was actually close to buying three records instead of one: The Misfits’ Static Age, Guns ‘N Roses’ Appetite For Destruction, and The Velvet Underground’s first record. But it ultimately came down to the deciding factor that led me to such great purchases as Born To Run and Sandinista!: when am I ever gonna see this again? So I ditched the three other records (which I can easily buy online one after the other once I have the money to spend) and shelled out the 40 bucks I needed to buy Zen Arcade.

Sure, it cost a lot, but I’m happy with it. The condition is great, no scratches on either side of both records, the sleeve feels great in my hands, and it’s one of the most important records in punk/alternative music. And that’s good enough for me. :)
